Wart treatment – Topicals

Blog

What is it? Warts may be treated in a number of ways. One common option is routine topical application of salicylic acid or a similar keratolytic with occlusion which irritates the wart, encouraging your immune system to respond to the virus while gradually peeling away the infected skin in layers.

Common products used include off the shelf Duo Film or Wart Off, and Pharmacist compounded salicylic acid preparations.

What is the advantage of this treatment? There are many wart treatment options all with varying pros & cons. The advantage of topical application is that it may be performed predominantly at home with intermittent Podiatrist review. You must ensure you strictly follow instructions though as missed applications significantly reduce likelihood of success.

Is it painful? As skin layers peel away and the acid irrates the skin some people may experience mild discomfort, especially on the weight bearing surfaces of the feet. If you are experiencing any pain during the treatment course you should see your Podiatrist immediately for review.

Risks and complications of the procedure? Possible complications of this include skin irritation, pain and ulceration. To prevent complications our Podiatrists will show you how to apply the topical while protecting the surrounding skin from damage.

You must not use this treatment if:

  • You are allergic to salicylic acid.
  • If the wart or surrounding skin is broken, red or infected.
  • If you have diabetes or circulation impairment.

If it does not work, what are my options? Application is typically repeated routinely over a 6-12 week period, if complications arise or resolution has not been achieved at 12 weeks alternate treatments should be considered. Alternate treatments to consider may include Falknor’s Needling or Cryotherapy.

How successful is the treatment? No single treatment is completely effective for all patients with warts being a notorious source of frustration for both practitioners and patients alike. Studies indicate a treatment course of routine topical salicylic acid application is 65% successful in the treatment of warts and should be considered as a viable treatment option.
